The Oscar Film Rant

I hate this time of year for films. Sounds crazy, right? Surely this is supposed to be the most exciting time! It's award season, time to get all glammed up and celebrate all the wonderful things that have happened in the world of film this year. Meh.

Don't get me wrong I've always loved watching the Oscars and it's still a dream of mine to win one but since I have started studying film I've noticed something that I find so frustrating.

It seems to me that all the films that get nominated are kind of the same. There seems to be a lot of people moping around looking moody and gloomy *cough* Manchester By The Sea *cough* and to be honest these films look boring af. Obviously this doesn't go for all of them, Arrival was amazing and I am yet to see La La Land but that seems like an exception too but honestly a lot of the nominations from the last few years look like the same thing to me.

I remember watching an interview with Matthew Vaughn (director of Kingsman and the Kick Ass films) and he said that the Academy needs to start celebrating the films people are actually watching, not just the ones they think are worthy and I couldn't agree more. It annoys me how the same few films get nominated for the big awards (best film, best actor/actress etc) like hey more than 5 films came out this year! Plus they are all films that have come out in the last month or so, what about all the other films that came out during the rest of the year?

It seems to me that these films are created just to win the awards and this doesn't seem right. That's not what film should be about. I am very much a believer that film is art, an expression and a story. It's purpose should be to entertain and educate, not to win awards. '

There are many great films that get ignored, for example Nocturnal Animals this year, and mediocre films that get nominated over and over again. This along with last years #OscarsSoWhite has definitely made me lose interest in the whole thing.

Sorry that turned into quite the rant didn't it! I'm feeling a bit better now I've got that off my chest though. Whilst we're on the subject of over-rated films, I'm thinking of doing a "Don't Believe The Hype" type series where I watch really popular and hyped up films/TV Shows and let you know if I think they're really worth it. Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in reading!

Do you agree with me? Or maybe you think the Academy has made the right decision with it's nominations? Let me know in the comments!

See you soon,

I'm Attempting Veganuary!

Yes you read that right. This cheese obsessed, ice cream loving girl is attempting Veganuary. If you don't know what I'm talking about, its a challenge to go Vegan for a month. A whole MONTH! "Why?!" I hear you shout, well there are many reasons why.

I have been a vegetarian since last April/May time and despite a couple of slip ups I've done really well with it and have felt better for it. People often ask me if I miss eating meat and honestly I really don't! However I've still felt really guilty about eating dairy as I know this is just as if not more cruel than the meat industry.

A few weeks ago my friend Max from work who is a fellow veggie suggested we try going vegan for a week in January as a challenge to put up on our youtube channels. I then saw a link to Veganaury on Facebook and thought, why not go for the whole month?

At first I thought ah how hard can it be? Just cut out milk, cheese and eggs and you'll be fine. Wrong! I didn't realise how many things included milk powder like literally wtf why do Squares Salt And Vinegar Crisps need to include milk powder? As you can imagine I was outraged when I found out.

I'm not doing it to be fashionable or like my bestie Catrina (who has been a vegan for almost as long as I can remember now) but I'm doing it for myself, the planet and of course, the animals. I have always been an animal lover but it feels wrong to say that when I know I am contributing to their suffering. I know it's not going to be easy either (my parents have already had a go at me about being an inconvenience to them) but I want to try! I'm not saying this is going to be a permanent change to my diet but in the spirit of new year I thought why not set myself a challenge?

I'm not in anyway going to be preachy to you guys, what you eat is completely up to you but here are some unusual facts that convinced me to take on the challenge:

Going vegan saves water. Do you know how many litres of water goes into making one beef steak? 4650!!! When you think about all the people who are fighting for clean water, its awful to think how much is being wasted on one steak alone.

Going vegan saves wildlife. When I think of veganism I think about saving the cows, pigs, sheep and chicken, but I had no idea it positively impacted on wildlife too! Every second, any area of rainforest equivalent to a football field is cleared to provide space to grow animal feed and for pasture grazing. This means animals such as cute little sloths are losing their homes! On average 1 lb of beef = 200 sqm of rainforest destroyed.

Going Vegan means you will be healthier. Obviously everyone needs to have a diet that works for them and their individual needs but there are so many health benefits to going vegan. The thing that stood out to me the most is the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture. Animals being pumped with them and then us consuming them leading us to become immune to it. In fact chief medical officer for the UK Dame Sally Davies said that if we carry on the way we are, people going for simple operations in 20 years time will die of routine infections because we have run out of antibiotics.

So yeah, quite a lot to think about! If going vegan is something you've been considering then why not join me? You can sign up to Veganaury here. Their website has lots of helpful tips and recipes as well as reasons to do it.

I will be doing an update post in February time to let you know how I got on. If its a success then I may also post some great recipes I found and show you what I bought etc so please let me know if there's anything you want to see!

Let me know if you're going to be joining Veganaury by leaving a comment below!

A New Start For My Fun Sized Life

Hat, New Look
Top, Urban Outfitters
Jacket, To Be Worn Again
Skirt, Bershka

Happy New Year everybody! I hope you've all had an amazing Christmas and you are getting over how much you've eaten and drunk! (Lets be honest there is still way too much food floating around the house that we've all been nibbling on).

One thing you may have noticed over the Christmas period is my absence from this blog. That is largely to do with the fact I was putting all of my efforts into Vlogmas (which kind of failed tbh) but it goes a bit deeper than that. I've been thinking a lot about what I want my blog to be and I haven't been happy with it for a while. I think some of it was down to not being happy with the look of my blog, hence the blog makeover, but I also haven't been 100% with the content I've been putting out either.

2016 was an incredible year for me blog-wise, I've got to know some amazing people and go to some awesome events but the best thing that's happened to me by far is how many people, some I know and some that I don't, who have had told me that they enjoy reading my posts. A few weeks ago a girl I used to work with came into Starbucks and said she always reads my posts when she sees them come up on Facebook. I haven't spoken to to her for about 2 years but it made me so happy. Sometimes I worry that nobody really cares about what I have to say, so it is so gratifying to find out someone besides my mum actually reads what I put out, and she's not the only one to come up to me and say it either!

Going into the new year sassy af

This has also given me something to reflect on, hence my blogging break. I realised that I could be someone people listen to, maybe I already am in my own little way. I really want to use that for good. I want my posts to help the people who read them. I want to talk about the real things that people my age are thinking about but maybe not necessarily talking about. I don't just want to be another girl on the internet talking about make up.

Don't get me wrong I'm not hating on beauty bloggers AT ALL. I just don't think that's me anymore. I'm 20 years old now and I feel it's time to move on a little bit from that. I may still write the odd beauty related post if there's something I think is worth talking about but it won't be something this blog is centred around.

Half way through writing this I got worried that this post is becoming a bit too "me, me, me" but then I thought, well, why not? It's my blog after all! I think I have been trying to please people too much and that needs to change. Whilst I want to help others, this blog is also for me so I will write what I want to write about. I have struggled for a long time with finding the "real me" but I feel like I am finally getting there and becoming the truest version of myself.

I want to write a lot more personal posts this year about things that affect me. I will also be writing a lot more about film, (not reviews though), music and vintage fashion because these are the things I am interested in. I am so excited for it! It was really fun looking at how far I've come with my blog in the last year and I hope this time next year we can look back and be even prouder.

I hope you're going to stick around and carry on enjoying this blog with me.

See you soon,

Beth x
